This is a question most writers don’t think about. Most are on social media because that’s what THEY say do.

However when you join a social media platform you need to know WHY?

Today we’re going to discuss why you are on social media.

This will help you determine your goals for social media, then you can create a plan to help you find time to be on social media, get results from being on social media, and feel like you’re getting something out of social media.

Answer the following questions:

Why are you on social media?
What do you want to gain from social media?
How often do you think you should be on social media?
What do you like and dislike about social media?

  1. These are good questions! Why am I on social media? Hmm… to find potential readers/buyers of my books. To network with other writers and interesting people. Those are probably the best answers. What do you want to gain from social media? More readers–more promotional opportunities to reach even more readers.
How often do you think you should be on social media? I’m not really sure. I feel like I spend more time on it than I should, but then again, maybe I should spend more time to see better results?
What do you like and dislike about social media? I like social media because I like seeing what other people are doing and interacting with them and getting a “feel” for what they enjoy reading and doing so I can match my writing with what seems to be popular with readers. I think I dislike the way social media has become a substitute for face-to-face interactions. I still like to see people in person, and I still think writers need to interact more with readers in direct ways.
