It’s my book Anniversary month (July 27)

Nine years in print.

Each year I share lessons I’ve learned in this journey.

In honor of my anniversary I will share my lessons again with a new entry.

Lessons I learned on the publication journey.

1. Just because I wrote a book doesn’t mean everyone knows it.

Lesson – Promotion is forever. If you want to continue selling books you have to let people know you have a book. Be consistent. Once a month will not increase your royalties.

2. A book will open doors.

Lesson – My book has open doors I never imagined opening and taken me on new adventures. I look forward to more doors opening.

3. Books don’t sell themselves.

Lesson – I created a plan and continue to work it. Eight years in and the plan still works. I tweak it every three months because things change and somethings don’t continue to work. It helps me move forward when I try new things.

4. Being consistent with your promotion doesn’t mean overwhelming yourself.

Lesson – I teach my clients to have fun with promotion because if you’re not having fun you won’t do it. I learned this the hard way by overwhelming myself the first year. I was trying to do everything to get my book in front of readers. I nearly burned myself out on promoting. I learned to do the fun stuff this helps me stay consistent and sale books.

5. This book has created new relationships.

This book is all about building relationships and over the last nine years I’ve built some amazing relationships. I’m truly thankful for them and look forward to the new relationships I will build going forward.

6. Word of mouth is powerful.

My book has been spoken about in different rooms I’m not even in. We want readers talking about our books.

Tell someone about my books if they have helped you. Together we can create more Social Butterflies.

7. Don’t resist your book being a series.

For six years I resisted the call to write another book about book promotion or update my first book because I honestly believed I was done. When Sylvia Hubbard-Hutula told me about Kindle Vella I finally realized I had more to share about book promotion and the Building series began. Four books later and I’ll be working on book five in August.

Don’t sleep on creating more books.

8. Nine years and my book is still making sales and few Amazon Bestselling lists.

Lesson – Don’t give up on your book sales, somebody out there needs your book. Your book only becomes obsolete when you take it out of print. As long as it’s in print you can find new readers.

9. Update your books as needed.

Next year is the 10th anniversary of BOR and I’m updating the book and the cover. I want it to match the Building Your Readership series.

I should have updated every two years because social media changes so frequently. I’ve learned you want your non fiction books to stay relevant, and look current if you plan on keeping it print. This helps your book find new readers.

Bonus Tip – Print books are still wanted.

During the pandemic I sold a lot of print books. Some readers like holding the book, so make sure you offer your book in all formats. Hopefully one day, I will offer an audio copy of BOR.

Thank you all who supported me on this journey of becoming a Social Butterfly.
