Home   Promotion   My First Viral Post – What It Taught Me

When I joined Threads I decided to try something different and focus on one of my social media topics – Kdramas. I’m a huge fan of Kdramas. They remind me of romance novels in video form. I’ve found my community on Facebook and I decided to use Threads as a way to meet more Kdrama lovers.

When I posted my post last Thursday about being addicted to Kdramas I didn’t expect it to go viral. I noticed my notifications kept dinging and people were liking it and I got a few comments. I responded to the comments and more notifications and comments. I ended my night with about 2000 views. The most I’d gotten on Threads. Through out the night the notifications were dinging. I woke up to 6000 views and a hundred comments.

I could have been happy with that but I decided to play with it more. My mentor, Sylvia Hubbard suggested I do a video. I put it off because I didn’t want to do a live video. I decided to pin a comment and share the link to my Kdrama gift shop. I also created a few more posts about Kdramas. They all begin to go viral.

When the post received 11,000 views I created a video with the post image saying I got 11,000 views. I shared it on my other platforms.

The first original post ended with 12,000+ views.

The second post I created got 14,000+ views.

The third post got 4000+ views.

The fourth and last post got 2000+ views.

I gained 300+ new followers.

Here’s what I learned. You are never ready for going viral. Make time for it when it does happen.

  1. Reply to comments. Ask them a question to keep the conversation going.

2. Add A CTA

My biggest mistake was not asking those who responded to visit my site. I pinned a post but it probably would have been better to send them there from the responds.

3. Create new content about the first post.

Starting a new conversation kept my feed moving and introduced me to new people.

4. Follow those who you know you will keep in contact with.

You don’t have to follow everyone who follows you. I chose to follow those who talked about Kdramas in their feed.

5. Going viral is fast pace.

It happening now so you have to be ready to participate. I took Friday evening and responded to every post. I liked, made comments, asked questions and followed those I wanted to follow. This took time but I believe it is what kept the conversation going.

    6. Have a goal for your content.

My goal for this post was to meet new Kdrama lovers. I wanted to introduce myself and my Kdrama gift store. https://kdramaloversgifts.myspreadshop.com

    7. Share your post on other platformsvideo and social media posts.

This informed others of what I was doing. I believe that gained more views to the posts.

    8. Jump into the comments of your new followers and those you followed.

This is how you continue the engagement.

    9. Engagement is important on any platform.

Driveby promotion will never go viral. It’s always the one with the engagement.

    10. Viral post are never what you think they will be.

I’ve been doing promotion for years and every time a post gets tons of engagement it’s not the one I hope will go viral. This one was my most views, but not my most comments. I do know that the topics are always something I’m interested in, so it helps with staying engaged.

I hope this tips help prepare for when your post goes viral. Stay on top of it, and have fun because if you’re not having fun with your engagement, why do it?
