I’m listening to a podcast called Black History Has History.

It brought back beautiful memories of 1994 and being introduced to Black Romance.
My first Black historical romance was Night Song by Beverly Jenkins. I was beyond excited. As a longtime historical romance reader, discovering a book with Black characters was thrilling. I first saw an ad for it in Romantic Times, and I knew I had to have it. On payday Friday, I headed straight to Waldenbooks, as I always did, ready to grab my latest book haul. That Friday was even more special because Arabesque had released new books too, and I was determined to get my hands on as many Black romances as possible.
As a military woman, I had heard of the Buffalo Soldiers, but I had never seen them in a romance novel. I enjoyed reading Chase Jefferson and Cara Lee Henson love story and the best part was the history sprinkled throughout the book.
Night Song will always hold a special place in my heart—not just as my first Black historical romance but also because it honored a piece of military history that I deeply respected.
