After I promoted my book for five months, I was in promotion overwhelm.
I was tired, I didn’t want to post another post about my book. I didn’t want to do another interview. I was so done. I think I slacked off in December. My sales suffered because I wasn’t doing a lot of promotion. I didn’t even schedule promotion.
I had to take a moment to breath. I had virtual tea with myself and went over what worked and what didn’t work with my promotion plan.
I found that:
You can’t do everything. I had a full loaded promotion plan, I was trying to do 15-10 promotion projects every month.
Even book promoters need time to rest. I didn’t make time for me. I was eating, sleeping book promotion.
Scheduling your promotion helps. Scheduling gives you time to rest and take a break if you want too, without it affecting your sales or you feeling guilty that you are not promoting every minute of the day.
When you’re overwhelmed you STOP and that’s not good either. You’re burnt out and your promotion and sales suffer from it too.
Here’s what I also learned
When you are in promotion overwhelm you stop using your promotion plan.
You feel like you aren’t getting any results.
You’re tired of talking about your book because you feel like no one is listening.
You drop off of social media.
Here are my tips for dealing with promotion overwhelm:
Your promotion plan is your friend. It will keep you on your track if you use it right. Don’t be trying to do everything. Pick one or two projects each month. Focus on them and promote.
Create a calendar that works for you and not beat you up. If you look at your calendar and every day is filled with promotion – no family time, no romance time, no writing time, no friend time. That’s too much. Your calendar should be balanced so you can have a life and be a writer.
Always check what works for your promotion and what doesn’t. The biggest way to overwhelm is when you are doing the same thing and getting no results. It sucks the life out of you.
For some bite size promotion works because you not doing a lot of promotion driving yourself crazy. You do a little each day to get your book in front of readers.
Find your balance when it comes to promotion. I can give you things to do and what not to do, but it’s up to you to find what works for you.
