My writing journey is like no other writer. Man this continues to be a hard lesson for me because I’m surrounded by so many amazing writers and I want to be just like them. I want write 78 books like Tammie Polk. I want my book to hit #2 on Amazon like Tesa Erven, I want to have loyal fans for 25 years like Beverly Jenkins.
I have to remind myself after my pity party that my journey is not their journey. My season as a writer will be different and amazing in its own way. I need to keep writing and focusing on completing my manuscripts so I can publish them and start building my own readership.
I can’t work on my own writing and building my readership if I’m busy comparing myself to other writers. Yes every now and then I find myself asking why aren’t you like, then I snap back and remember I can only be LaShaunda.
Your journey isn’t like my journey and my journey isn’t like yours. We can learn from each other and take those lessons and improve our journey.
That’s what I’ve learned on my writing journey is to learn from others. Someone might have a good way to plot or outline a manuscript. Someone has a good promotion tool. Someone shares how to batch content or how to schedule promotion. I can learn their techniques or continue with my own. Which ever works for me is best.
If you are going through the why can’t I be like them stage, find what works for you and continue on this writing journey. You don’t want to get stuck in this stage or you will never complete your manuscripts. Take it from someone who has learned the hard way. Enjoy your writing journey.
Have you stopped your writing journey because you weren’t like other writers?
