Building Your Readership Newsletter – Issue 14 – Promotion Stages -#3 Post Launch

You’ve released your book.  Had an amazing launch party.  Sold hundreds of books.  Now what’s next? If you don’t plan on this being your last book, I’m sure you’re already working on the next one.  So, my advice will be about marketing the one you just released.

When I work with authors, they are so excited about the release that never even think about what happens after the release.  They don’t plan for it, and I will be honest and say their promotion usually stops after the release date.

Why?  I believe its because they didn’t plan for it.  I’m a huge proponent for creating a book promotion plan because it will help you stay consistent with your book promotion.  Your plan will help you move past your book release date.

I believe your book will open new doors for you.  If you create a plan, it will help you navigate those doors.  When I released my first book, I didn’t have goals like I teach now.  I knew what I wanted to do, and I had a plan, but I didn’t know about the different doors it would open and the paths I would go down.  I went down a coaching path, a speaker path and a guest path.  I was not prepared, and I had to make a lot of decisions on where I wanted to go with my books.  Now I teach my clients to think about the doors the book can open.  Which ones do you want to go through.

In the next few issues, I will share about different things to do after your book releases.

Doors Your Book Will Open

When you publish your book, you move up to the next level – expert.  You’re an expert in writing a book. An expert in the genre you write.  If you are self-published, an expert in self-publishing.  If you worked with a traditional publisher, you are now and expert in working with a traditional publisher.  Now I know you’re saying I’m not an expert and you don’t feel like an expert but believe me that’s how your world will see you.  As soon as I said my book was released, my DMs began to blow up.

I’m here to say be prepared for these doors to open.  It’s up to you if you choose to go through them.  Don’t let other push you forward when you really don’t want to.  For instance, many authors are introverts so you might not feel comfortable being a presenter or workshop teacher.  Or you might be like me and enjoy teaching.

Here are few doors you might be presented:

Presenter

Speaker

Columnist

Blog Guest

Podcast Guest

Radio Guest

TV Guest

Workshop Teacher

Course Creator

Contributor

Coach

Mentor

Now that your book has released, it’s a good time to revisit your goals.  What do you want to do with your book?

Here are a few recommendations:

Increase Visibility

Reviews

Meet New Readers

Literary Events

Sales Goals

Distribution

Media Outreach

Collaborations and Partnerships

Advertising

This is the time to revisit your book promotion plan or create a plan for after the release. Here are the seven steps I use for creating a book promotion plan.

Book Promotion Plan

Step One – What Are Your Sales Goals?

How many book sales would you like for the rest of the year?

Step Two – What Are Your Promotion Goals?

What will you do to reach your sales goal?

Step Three – What Is Your Promotion Budget?

Where would you like to spend your promotion budget?

Step Four – What Is Your Promotion Schedule?

How often will you promote?

Step Five – What Is Your Promotion Content?

What type of content will you create?

Step Six – What’s On Your Promotion Calendar

What are the dates of your promotion?

Step Seven – What Are Your Promotion Results?

What are the results of your promotion?

As you can see there’s so much more to consider after your book releases.  I highly recommend working on this before the book releases but if you haven’t taken some time and create your goals and book promotion plan to help you move forward with your book marketing.
